Scarborough scout group faces uncertain future as leaking roof sparks fundraising drive

An urgent appeal to save Scarborough Scout headquarters has launched, as a damaged and leaking roof could cause the group to stop running their weekly meetings.

The historic local scout group is facing an uncertain future unless thousands of pounds can be raised to replace its failing roof that has been deemed beyond repair.

The group fears that water damage could also compromise the interior of the building, and further damage could eventually force the group to halt weekly meetings and activities.placeholder image

First Scarborough Scout Group, which has served the local Northstead community in Scarborough for generations, has launched a GoFundMe appeal to secure the buildings future and ensure local children have a safe place to meet.

For decades, the Scout Headquarters has been the cornerstone of the Northstead community, helping hundreds of young people learn vital life skills, build confidence, and make lifelong friendships. However the buildings roof has severely deteriorated over recent years.

Following a series of patches and temporary fixes, surveyors have delivered the devastating news that the roof has finally reached the end of its life and must be replaced.

Without swift intervention, the group fears that water damage could also compromise the interior of the building, it had already damaged the floor, and repairs to the floor are underway.

Further damage could eventually force the group to halt weekly meetings and activities.

The group is calling on former Scouts, local businesses and the wider Scarborough community to rally behind them.

A First Scarborough Scout Group spokesperson said: “Every donation, no matter how small, will go directly toward the cost of the structural repairs.

“The group understands that times are tough for everyone right now, but even the cost of a cup of coffee will make a massive difference to our fundraising total.

"We want to ensure that First Scarborough Scout Group is here for the next generation of young adventurers.

“You can read more about our appeal and make a direct donation online by visiting the official GoFundMe page at https://gofund.me/5b1139480.

“Local businesses interested in offering sponsorship, materials or trade skills are also encouraged to get in touch with the group directly. Email [email protected].”
