Mixed weekend for relegation-battling Danby Hockey Club Ladies
Danby Hockey Club Ladies 1s earned a crucial 2-1 home win against Newcastle 3s on Saturday, followed 24 hours later by a 1-0 loss at Newcastle Uni 6s, leaving their YNE North East Women’s Division 2 survival in the balance.
Danby 1s head to this Saturday's final league game of the season against Stockton needing a win to stay in the second division.

On Saturday, the hosts’ work-rate was impressive from the whistle, Lily Harland exploded back onto the pitch when she was subbed back on just before half-time, tracking back, battling through midfield and breaking the deadlock with a powerful strike from the P spot.
After the break Sarah Thompson sent in fast accurate crosses to create further scoring opportunities, however the visitors levelled with 15 minutes remaining.

Danby kept their heads, Bronwyn Hodgson was brilliant at centre-forward, pressuring every free hit to win back possession or force the error.
With only 10 minutes to go, player of the match Kath Hogarth reached to make a crucial block on a Newcastle hit-out, feeding a precise ball for the speedy Alice Hogarth to run straight into the D and cross for a perfectly positioned Millie Cook to sweep decisively past the advancing keeper, into the left corner to make the final score 2-1.
A buoyant Danby team travelled to Newcastle University on Sunday.
Despite tired legs Danby dominated the first half with a gritty performance from Plum Sweet at right-half, maintaining possession despite an onslaught of tackles linked well with Millie Cook and Alice Hogarth. Harland dominated the attacking circle and was unlucky not to direct the strong injections in from Sarah Thompson past the home team keeper.
Player of the match Grace Brown soon halted any attempts Newcastle made at the Danby goal. A solid team performance with Danby holding most of the possession meant the scoreline remained goalless at half-time.
The second half brought a downpour of rain which made the Newcastle pitch very slippy.
The home team came out with renewed vigour and pressured the Danby defence at pace.
Christine Tarrant demonstrated her strength and physicality at left-back but unfortunately Newcastle scored with about 15 minutes to go.
Danby had several passages of strong attacking play with Cook and Harland putting their keeper under pressure but were denied.
Danby 2s secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Redcar 2s.
From the opening whistle, Danby set the tempo with an aggressive press. Laura Anderson-Cornforth played a key role early on, collecting possession in advanced areas and driving several promising Danby attacks. Her work rate helped keep Redcar under pressure and established Danby’s control of the game.
Redcar looked dangerous on the counter, however, Danby’s defensive line remained composed. Hettie Cook and Ellie Jackson-Fishpool stood firm at the back, reading the play well and repeatedly stepping in to deflect or intercept Redcar’s attacking moves.
Danby thought they had taken the lead earlier, only for the goal to be ruled out. Undeterred, the team maintained their intensity and continued to push forward. Their persistence paid off when Deb Callaghan worked the ball effectively in the attacking third and gave Danby a deserved 1-0 lead.
Debutant Summer Butler-Hogarth made an immediate impact. She applied constant pressure to the Redcar defence, disrupting their attempts to play out from the back and helping Danby sustain momentum in the attacking half.
On the right wing, Isobel Brown and Chloe Sisson combined effectively to drive several attacks. Their link-up play created multiple opportunities and kept Redcar’s defence busy, although Danby were unable to convert any additional chances.
